May 24, 2010 Allen named CHL's top goaltender..... more

May 2, 2010

Although we don't do this as a rule on our home page, I thought it was important that we share this with goalies & goalie parents...........

A couple of weeks ago, reading the sports section of the local newspaper, I saw where a younger goalie, we'd previously coached was being recognized for a very special accomplishment.  As it turns out, when I talked to his coach, his whole year was very special.  In fact he moved up 3 levels from the previous year to play at the top level in his age division.  An incredible feat any way you look at.  So, I though I would send off a note and congratulate him.  I didn't expect a reply and when I did receive one I was totally taken aback by what he said.  I quote from his reply exactly as it was written:

Dear John Alexander
Thank you for your e-mail and if it wasn't for you I would have never made it this far.  You taught me the basics of goaltending and without that you can't be a goalie.  I also learned that hard work pays off, but for me, it's not really work, it's hockey. DG

What more can you say?  The last sentence says it all.

Cheers

John A.

Jake Allen's best Christmas gift might not come from under the tree this year. Rather it was upon hearing the news that he has made this year World Junior squad

After not playing at all in the game on Thursday night against the CIS Saskatchewan all-star team, one might have thought that was the sign Allen had made this years World Junior Team. It is now evident the staff took Thursday night to try and find Jake's goaltending partner, as Jake Allen has made the 2010 version of Canada's World Junior team.

So far this season Allen has posted impressive numbers during the regular season with his QMJHL team, the Montreal Juniors. In addition, Allen performed strongly this August at the World Junior development camp. His performance this week as well at camp has been certainly up to par. With all of this being said, Jake has accomplished the dream that many of us have, playing for our country at Christmas time.

It is no shock that Jake has arrived at this point in his life. Allen is a young athlete that understands the true sense of the word ‘professionalism’. Even from a young age, Allen was always focused on being better everyday. It is this type of attitude that propels individuals to the top in whatever they do. Allen, continually pushes himself, as he realizes he is not just competing against someone in his own area or region in the world. Goaltending is a global position and if one wants to be on the world stage, you must become one of the best in the world. Plain and simple.

With this we congratulate Jake and his family.

We ask you to stay tuned over the Christmas break and during the tournament as we will have daily coverage of Jake right here on our
site!!

Book Release
David & I recently participated with several other coaches from Canada and the US in writing a book, authored by Brian Daccord, called "Hockey Goaltending".  The book is available for order on-line at Amazon and Chapters/Indigo.  It should also be available these book stores within a couple of weeks.  The book covers all aspects of goaltending including off-ice training, equipment and even has a 70 minute DVD included.  We think this would make a great read for any goaltender, coach or goaltender parent.  Once you see it, we're sure you'll agree.
